Hey Donnie, what era are you booking? The Monday Night Wars?

The idea is to get ratings, not deliver surprises. If Jericho just debuted one week what would that do for ratings? Nothing.

You are booking for surprise factor...Russo.

Do you think that if the crowd was chanting "Y2J" and then Broadus Clay came out they would be happy or disappointed? If they wanted Jericho and got Clay? They would be swerved, surprised. But sometimes it is better to just give the people what they want. Predictable as it may be.

I'm glad Dan and Beth were the voices of sanity on this episode.

I agree with Donnie about 20-12. I also agree that the Jericho thing was stupid.

Great episode.

Since when does a "surprise" mean it has to be a one time thing?

And are you serious with your comment? If people chanted Y2J and got Brodus it would suck? NO it would be AMAZING and instantly elevate Brodus and create a natural feud for him WITH Jericho!!!

Booking surprises has nothing to do with the Monday Night Wars ... it has everything to do with keeping your audience engaged.

I suppose the writers of Dexter are booking for a showdown with Nitro?

I have to disagree with Donnie's call on Brodus. If fans who regard Y2J as one of the best see Brodus coming out I can just hear the deflating sound of the fans.

I agree with BDD, Y2J's return was a fail. Side note when are we gonna get to see a pic of Crystal Beth? Her voice is so sexy also I hope Frank never returns, the show does not need him at all.

Wrestling is about listening to the people and giving them what they want. See that is the funny part about wrestling bookers in 2012, is that they think they have to trick the people and be "smarter than them" rather than
just listening and having your finger of some kind, any kind, of pulse.

The people should be the ones ultimately booking where you are going. The people (clearly) have wanted Jericho back for some time. The people (besides you) do not give 2 shits (yet) about this big monster former bodyguard of Snoop Dogg who has been supposed to debut every week now for literally 2 months but is constantly cut due to "time constraints".

Dexter is a great show. But how is Dexter in any way, shape or form a professional wrestling television show promoting a monthly pay-per view? Is the goal of the Dexter writers to be an infomercial that promotes about a million different things and products under that one Dexter umbrella, building towards a monthly Dexter PPV where 2 characters are going to have a 30 minute live choreographed fight? Get a grip. As much as wrestling tries to say "we are like any other television show" they are not. They are a completely unique brand of entertainment that used to be about listening to what the people wanted and reacting/adapting to that, not swerving them and fucking them to keep them...as you so eloquently put it..."engaged".

Now, of course there are ways you can surprise the people in a way where they don't feel let down or disappointed. But for the most part, surprises and swerves in wrestling are a let down. How many swerves have you seen in TNA? How many? How many times have you read the feedback after a TNA PPV and the majority of the comments are people bitching because they wanted to see something happen that, although may have been predictable, was what they wanted....and Russo fucked them. Swerved them. Big Surprise! Broadus Clay (crickets).

Now the question is...am I engaged because I get swerved watching a TNA PPV finish? God no.

and THAT is where the issues exist.

Do you go with the safe / expected choices ... or do you show the ability to have vision and project forward.

I sat and watched Randy Orton VS Brock Lesnar at Fan Access for Wrestlemania 18 and i told people I was with I wanted to go watch that match because they were both going to be top stars and future WWE champions.

You know how many people watched that match? Maybe 30. Because until you condition the people to care, they don't. Instead they lined up for an autograph from a Diva who nobody would even recognize today.

A series of vignettes follow by an intro AND (here's the kicker) the sustainability of a good program and good writing is how you make people care about new talent that you're invested in.

To say,
You don't do that with Brodus because it would be crickets is short sighted.

Giving the people what they want is a flawed line of thinking. People don't KNOW what they want ... they only know what they know.

The people at Maple Leaf Gardens chanted BORING at Edge Vs Christian in 1997 even though it was an amazing match. Had the bookers given the people what they wanted, those two would have never debuted.

As stated on show, I have no issues with Jericho. I've spent time with the guy. I've had dinner with him. He's smart, and a great talent. I've got issues with the WWE's horrible vision for him.

I agree with Donnie.

If I ran a company I have to say that I would listen to maybe 20% of what the fans said. Then do about 5% of it. If the fans got what they wanted wrestlers would be dead. "Bring back chair shots! Bring back piledrivers! We want more bleeding!"

People will be over Jericho in a bout a month. I for one like Brodus Clay. I wrote an article about him on here a while back (Tha New Look) and it sucked when he got hurt. People can keep their wrestlers that come back eight times just to get complained about. I'd actually like to see new talent. Imagine if Jericho was treated back in the day the way people are treating clay.

And yes I know Clay and Y2J are completely different wrestlers with completely different styles. But it would just be nice to see Clay get a chance.

Big Daddy Donnie said...

For the record:

I am NOT pissed the reveal didn't turn out to be Clay ... nor am I saying it should have been...

I'm saying they missed an amazing opportunity to BUILD a star...

If the office had someone else in mind, even someone I didn't like - that would be fine with me, because at least the logic is sound.

Whoever this anonymous guy is, reveal yourself. I'm pretty sure BDD would know better since he actually is a booker and has been in the wrestling business a long time and you are a fan

Honestly the crypic promos are now stupid to me for one reason: Crystal Beth could have done such a better job with the voiceovers

I agree with Dan, I say Twenty Twelve

But I did say two thousand eleven

Anonymous said...

I say 2 thousand 12.
I also agree with the bad bookin decision with the promos

http://news.yahoo.com/fred-got-two-beatings-per-day-homework-asks-230717586--abc-news.html

"Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

"If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"

Will Dan-e-o be "No"-ing for this article?
