Who's That Girl?

Recently I was watching an episode of “Smackdown” and there was a match between Maria and Victoria.

I sighed when Maria’s entrance music started and my girl asked me, “What’s wrong with her?” I replied, “She represents everything that is wrong with women’s wrestling.” She’s the chick equivalent of John Cena except she doesn’t look like a wrestler. Ask me any day and I’ll pick a match with Victoria, Awesome Kong, or Beth Phoenix over any other “diva.”

I’m not quite sure who the WWE is aiming for with their women’s matches. Is it actual fans of wrestling, those that want to see a technically sound match or at least one involving the semblance of a story? Or is it for dudes that sit there praying for some boobage to slip out? During the match I mentioned I knew from the start that Maria was going over. For whatever reason since Trish Stratus left Victoria has been around as an enforcer for other heels or as fodder for the likes of (ugh) Kellyx2. Victoria still has the moves that move me (Widow’s Peak, standing moonsault, and The Spider’s Web). So why is she losing to a girl with the shape of a ten year old and the personality of the average Miley Cyrus fan? Is wrestling giving us what we asked for or what they think we need?

Let’s look at the females that get me excited about a match. Awesome Kong (naturally), Victoria, Melina, and Beth Phoenix. With Awesome Kong I am reminded of Vader in his prime. A monster that doesn’t talk much and is ridiculously dominant. From her sick ass Awesome Bomb, the Implant Buster, and her stiff ass punches, there’s not much to dislike about her unless your name is Big Daddy Donnie (sorry, dude).

People talk about how good Chyna was but for me Kong is that female wrestler that is too good for the women in TNA. Don’t give me that crap about how good The Beautiful People, Gail Kim, and Miss Jackie are. Miss Jackie hasn’t been good since the 90’s. Kong is what women’s wrestling should look like.

I have already mentioned Victoria who I believe should have been the future of women’s wrestling in the WWE but was pushed aside for whoever needed to spread their beaver in Playboy. She should go down as one of the best but will end up like Mr. Perfect: Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Melina, Melina, Melina. If I made my list of “Get Out Of Jail Free Cards”, you know?, chicks that if you could get away with while being in a relationship, she would make the list (along with Rosario Dawson and Jenna Von Oy). At first it seemed as if she was just eye candy. But her matches with Phoenix and Mickie James made me see just how good she was. Her flexibility gives her the opportunity to do shit that I’ve never seen before. I think she will be around for a while longer and showing us shit we never thought possible. She gets my vote for the very first First Blood Match involving women. Just wait.

Beth Phoenix whom I haven’t been too impressed since she lost the title I was impressed with how she first started. She doesn’t have the same cookie cutter look that most of the Diva’s (God, I hate that term) do besides being blond. In the right spot I think she could be the women’s champ for well over a year. What she needs is one thing.

Fucking competition! My, God! How hard is it to hire some chicks that can wrestle? Yeah, she can barely get a clothesline to look believable (I’m looking at you Maria) but have you seen them knockers?! We really need to get away from that crap before we head back towards HLA, costume matches, and pillow fights. The women I mentioned have done a lot to move away from the novelty of women’s wrestling. It’d be sad to see it slide right back down because of one set of perfect boobs. And have you seen that new Diva’s Title…?

To clarify .......... i reeeeeally like Kong and LOVE how she's been used - other than puttin over Toronto native Shantelle Taylor in weakalaz fashion.

All I've ever said that's different than the norm are things that TNA agents are very aware of. She has limited mobility and when she has to bump - which is rare she's not the quickest to her feet.

The comparison to Vader (and even Joe) are common ... but aren't fair to either men.

Her athleticism pales in comparison to each.

Melina? You have to be smoking the good stuff.

But, on the contrary, Kelly Kelly is actually a nice site to see in the ring, the girl is improving every week it seems.

Awesome Kong too good for TNA Women's Division? I think not, considering that whole division is stacked with women who can put on great matches.

Clarify this, if Kong is too good for TNA's KO, is she supposed to be a better fit for WWE?

Lastly, Victoria has been the black sheep for a long time now, and I don't think she minds, because if she wanted to be a top dog or women's champion, she would have left for TNA long ago. So I think she's satisfied.

(And as I always like to say to those who think too much when watching wrestling, you can want your favorite wrestler to be on top, but don't go hunting for "inside scoops" to justify why they're not.)

geez, i see maria as entertainment when she goes on she gets the pops and i dont mind. i could nevee EVER expect or even see womens wrestling on the same league with the boys, maria is there for good eye candy and im happy with that she does good for wwe outside of the ring.
she is pretty much the only diva search i really care about besides candice.

seriously if your gonna watch wwe just for the divas/womens wrestling your stupid.

if you watch shimmer that shit gets boring too seriously the dvds are so bad.

theres more to wrestling than just moves and flow in the ring, and she does gets the most crowd reaction than all the other divas bar none.
same with beautiful people they do their job to a T.
and unless its japan than as i stated earlier womens wrestling is never gonna go up

AD2D2, I honestly haven't noticed Maria improving. Her clotheslines drive me nuts. I'll readily admit when someone improves that was shit (like Candice Michelle, Stratus, and Melina) but with maria I doubt they will go all out with her learning to be really good.

No, I'd never want Kong to head to the WWE. She'd squash the entire division except for maybe two women. It's just that in TNA she beat everyone and then some chick that is absolutely uninteresting beat her. Yes, the idea of how it happened was cool but its execution was not. Just get better women. Take Sayeed away from her and have them go at it i both her characters.

As for thinking too much when watching wrestling, thats not asking me to not think too much in life. When I watch a match and someone messes up often or just comes across as unbelieveable it yanks me out of the show. Its like watching a movie and seeing a boom mic or someone throw a punch that is a foot away from their opponents face. I can watch wrestling and be happy as hell but not when its just bad. If inside scoops formed my opinion Randy Orton would not be one of my favorite wrestlers.

'Ville, I have no problem with eye candy if its at ringside cheering for a wrestler. But to have it in the ring beating one another badly or just taking up time that could be used for something more interesting makes no sense to me. Like that Olympic themed match last week. That was like 10 minutes that could've been used for something cool. What did that match accomplish (besides Victoria looking in great shape and further blurring the lines between what her character is supposed to be)?
