Minutes after we went off air, we got word that Frank's sister gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Congrats Fatty.

Congrats to Frank! Great job everyone on this weeks show!

I'm at the point where you're talking about Angle's new movie, so I figured I'd swing over to IMDB to see who else is in this thing. As a resident of the Pittsburgh area (the home turf of your Olympic hero), I wasn't surprised to see that it was shot here, and I was even LESS surprised to see that the cast list plays like a who's who of Pittsburgh ComiCon "celebrity" guests. By that, I of course mean that they were friends of George Romero, they played zombies in "Dawn of the Dead", and they haven't done much of anything else in the last 3 decades. Hell, *I* have a more impressive filmography than these folks *coughcheapplugcouch*

Congrats on being a father Frank
(You did say it was his sister right)

And moments after that, Fatty Frank ate that healthy baby boy.

Good show. Listening to the call about the free ppv type show. You guys keep comparing it to UFC, but why not WCW? Clash of the Champions was great in the 90's. I could see it being good as a special attraction type show, blow off minor type feuds and hope to attract a few new viewers.

How did "Clash of the Champions" not get brought up a single time during the discussion of whether TNA should do occasional free super shows?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clash_of_the_Champions

That brings up a lot of stuff I knew already, and you guys are probably already aware of it, and it even touches on what you guys said on the show about cock-blocking PPV buys with free supercards, as that's why the "Clash" shows existed in the first place. It was a great concept, doing the occasional free PPV-quality shows (I would even say that Saturday Night's Main Event fell into the category, but those shows weren't particularly stacked...or good), but once the Monday Night Wars began, and you started to see more A-list showdowns on a weekly basis and more and more PPVs got added to each company's schedules, the big free shows sort of became obsolete from a business standpoint. I've heard enough complaints about giving something away on free TV, whether it's heel turns, title changes, blow-offs to big feuds, etc., and as a regular buyer of TNA PPVs (they're out there...somewhere...), wouldn't the addition of semi-regular "Clash"-type events feel like a bit of a slap in the face? There are enough PPVs that are ultimately meaningless, and wouldn't free shows where the point IS to give PPV-quality stuff away for free further dilute the monthly PPV concept?

That said, I would be ALL for adding free TNA supercards, but only if some PPVs bit the dust in the process. It seems as though WCW ran "Clash" in the months or periods between their big however many (four or five?) PPVs, so what TNA would have to do is figure out which PPVs deserved to stay, which ones had enough of an identity of their own (Lockdown and Slammiversary are the only ones that come to mind at the moment) that that would benefit from a bigger free TV build-up, and work around that. These free supershows could even run in place of what would have otherwise been stops on the house show circuit in some of their bigger markets. They could even treat it like a house show, where the focus is on the wrestling and the angles directly related to whatever match-up you're seeing. There could be angle development and advancement, sure, but the show itself would be more or less self-contained and wouldn't just be a shill for an actual upcoming PPV or promo time for people that aren't even on the show.

What do you guys think?

Dammit! Between the time that I clicked on the comments section and when I got done writing, someone else brought up "Clash". Eh, at least my comment won't sound TOO much like a broken record...

I was the one who called in about the free tna ppv's, and i totally agree with you Plan B. You (and the guys) pretty much got a point i was trying to make about putting shows on opposite a raw ppv. I think TNA and Spike could also run the option of airing a previous ppv on tv during a wwe ppv. A great example is TNA could have aired either Slammiversary from last year or a recent one like Against All Odds or Destination X from a few months back and went up against Over the Limit. It would hardly cost tna anything and would be different from wwe. I think with all the cutbacks tna needs to make, that they should start to think outside the box and look in a different direction.

Oh wow, I didn't even think of just re-running a semi-recent PPV for free. I mean, not just SHOWING IT for free, but running it at basically no cost to TNA. The ratings for the Thursday repeats of their Monday night shows seemed to indicate that the audience didn't seem to mind too terribly that they weren't seeing the show live (or at least first-run, depending on what their taping schedule was), as they at least matched or even exceeded the Monday rating. Remember how Impact used to run on Saturday nights? If they aren't going to do an original free supercard, how about airing an edited version of the previous PPV the Saturday night before the next PPV, if not directly against an 'E PPV as P.A. suggested? By edited, I mean they could streamline it by cutting out segments that had nothing to do with matches, matches with guys that might have left the company between the 2 shows, OR cleaned up versions of matches that fix mistakes or botched spots, such as what the WWE did with Swagger's MITB win at 'Mania. The 'E usually has their previous PPV out on DVD around or before the next one, and I can't imagine that it hurts buyrates too terribly, or else they wouldn't do it, right? TNA could learn from that and basically do it for free with very little risk, as we all know that their PPV buyrates are fairly inconsequential to begin with. If anything, it might HELP the buyrate of the next night's event. Hmmmmm, I wonder if there are any job openings in TNA's programming department...
