Last week, DJB mentioned that ECW was the A show, but that he wasn't sure if "Raw" or "SmackDown!" was the B show. After last night, I'm going to argue that "Raw", is in fact, the weakest show of the three. Don't get me wrong, that's not to say that the show doesn't have upside to it, but in comparison to the other two shows, there are too many obvious glaring flaws in the show.Chris Jericho used to be great as a face or heel. However, given the events of the past year, these days he's much better suited to be a heel. His promo to kick off "Raw" was golden. Like I said before, nothing like hitting a man's wife to get the heat piled on. Remember that, Hayden Avery. Want to really piss the New Era off? Slug Dan's boyfriend.
Michaels has always been credited as the guy who likes seeing his name in lights, and Jericho made sure to make a point of that in his promo last night. Also, no run-ins during the promo was a good thing as well. WWE and TNA seem to think that any promo is a good time for a run-in, and they're not always. Letting Jericho come out and spew venom, uninterrupted, builds emotion and interest into the eventual payoff for this storyline.
Poor Paul Burchill. A month ago, he was feuding with Kofi Kingston for the Intercontinental Championship. Last night, he got squashed and lost to the worst Batista Bomb in history. It looked like Batista tweaked one of his legs while performing the move, but I haven't heard anything yet, so I can't tell. What I can say, though, is that with more cuts rumored, Paul Burchill's head may be on the chopping block. Which is a shame, because he was the best incestuous pirate WWE ever had. O for Batista tripping on the steps when he came out.
Paul's counterpart, Katie Lea, was involved in a Divas tag match last night. I have to give credit to all the girls in this match. Mickie James and Katie Lea can work, we've all seen that, but it seems that Kelly Kelly and Jillian have also been polishing up their skills. It seems that the presence of the Knockouts Division in TNA has caused WWE to raise their game.
JBL squashed Jamie Noble. There's not a lot that I can say about this, it was a short match, no promos of any sort, but props to Jamie Noble, because he sold those clotheslines stiffly. This will help JBL regain some steam, as whenever Punk drops the belt, I'd like to see JBL be the guy to take it.
I had a conversation with one of my friends during "Raw" last night, and he mentioned that he legit hated JBL. I told him that that's why JBL's so great. He's a heel through and through. He's not a bad guy who does cool things, he doesn't have any catchphrases, he in short has nothing that can make fans warm up to him. He just comes out and makes you hate him.
Simply Priceless came down, and then Cryme Tyme came down to the ring. My first thought was "Is Cryme Tyme finally using the title shot that they earned two years ago?" Of course, the answer to that was no. But they did at least steal the belts, which I popped for. They're supposed to be thugs and thiefs, it's about damn time they stole those things. Feudalaz in the workalaz.
Santino Marella is the man. Even though his promo was cut during a commercial (whoever made that decision, I want their asses fired), he had several great lines during his match with D-Lo Brown. Because I know Dan's going to O for these lines, I'm going to beat him to it. I present to you, Santino Marella's lines "O" tha night.
-"I appreciate it, but I got it" (to Beth Phoenix after she protected him from receiving the Lo Down, only to have his jaw jacked by D-Lo a second later).
-"I'm-a the Intercontinental Champion...forever!"
It's nice to see that the Intercontinental Championship is finally being treated like it means something.
Kane's new music is dope, as it fits his new psychotic heel persona, but his storyline is still shit. He admitted that he knew Rey was alive. Well, then, why did you go around for weeks asking if he was alive or dead? To make things worse, out comes Batista, who appeared to be sporting a busted wheel (if he was fine, it was the best selljob of his career, but I question how his leg was supposed to have been hurt in the first place.
CM Punk is finally in the main event! Whoopee! But he lost to Chris Jericho. And now he has to defend his title in the worst concept match for a World Championship match ever. A Championship Scramble in which the title can change hands multiple times in 20 minutes and whoever has the belt at the end of 20 minutes is the champion. First of all, suddenly a lot of main eventers are going to be real easy to pin in this match. Second of all, we may see everybody involved in the match rack up a mad number of title reigns before the match is over. Too bad Crash Holly isn't still around to join in the fun.
As a parting thought, why was it that all night, when the teaser for "Major Announcement" came up, it showed Shane and Stephanie, yet Adamle was the one who made the announcement?
Tha Results:
*Batista def. Paul Burchill
*Mickie James & Kelly Kelly def. Katie Lea Burchill & Jillian
*JBL def. Jamie Noble
*John Cena def. Simply Priceless in a 2-on-1 Handicap Match
*D-Lo Brown def. Santino Marella by DQ
*Chris Jericho def. CM Punk

The running theme for today is SHITALAZ! RAW Is SHITALAZ! The burial of Paul Burchill who they totally dropped the ball on is SHITALAZ!The continued burial of the Tag Belts is SHITALAZ! The burial of Simply Priceless by throwing them a handicap match and having them job to "The Marine"is SHITALAZ!Taking the number one title on your brand and putting it up in a gimmick match because you lack quality contenders for it is SHITALAZ! Last but not least, taking the number one show on your brand and booking it so badly that it is now the number 3 is SHITALAZ!
At least Punk got in a Welcome to Chicago Mother Fucker last night. Even though Jericho used that move for a good portion of his fed run. Nice to see Punk in a main event, and I don't think anyone expected him to win since it's his home town. Vince gets off on having guys lose or out and out embarrassing them in their hometowns.
Not a bad show, but why when the World Champ fought a guy not in the match and lost is that guy not added? Seriously hold Shawn Michaels off of TV for a while. I don't think it would hurt anyone's feelings if that were to happen. Put Jericho in the match and make it an Elimination Chamber or something. This concept is knee.
They put a twenty minute time limit on a World Championship match? Are you serious? 20 minutes? Brian Gerwitz needs to sit Vince's bags down and concentrate on writing instead of being a stooge. He and Russo use the dealer when buying their "medicine."
You didn't see Batista bust his shit entering the ring for his squash with Burchill? It was hilarious. Even the ref was ribbing him as he limped to the turnbuckle. Not sure if it actually hurt him, but it was still funny as hell.
I was legitimately shocked when Jericho won, I didn't see that coming. And for the first time since he's used that knee-to-face buster, it looked like it hurt.
I'm glad Paul Burchill is losing now. I never understood why he was winning matches in the first place, guy was a shadow of what he was on SD. Pirate Burchill had a lot of fans, way more than whatever this Burchill is, and that's the truth (i think >_>). Who doesn't love Pirates of the Caribbean? And that gimmick was almost perfect timing with At Worlds End, yet they killed it, when he clearly got good reactions. I hope they bring the Pirate back before they decide they have nothing for him. And bring back the C-4! It's wrestling, it doesn't have to make complete sense.
Lastly, this scramble match is cool...but it's not new. WWE did this years ago with the hardcore title. The game mode was even in "Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain!" It was one of my favorite matches to play, so I guess the match should be cool.
adance2die2: Some would argue that being able to draw comparisons between the World Heavyweight Championship and one of the least prestigious, most meaningless titles in history would be a bad thing, but hey.
I see what you mean. But it's prowrestling, scripted tv. While many speak down on the hardcore title today (smarks >_>), but it was good-fun-entertaining tv when it was around. The title also gave some of the lower carders something to do other than just get squashed all the time.
At the end of the day, it's still "sports entertainment", you don't have to respect it, or find it credible, you just have to tune in everyweek.
I liked the Hardcore Title when it was introduced, but after a while it was just a way for guys to run around and spray each other with fire extinguishers and be "wild" and "unpredictable". The booking got really lazy and repetitive which was frustrating because there's so much they could have done with a legit Hardcore division. Instead it was just the same old tired shit again and again until they got rid of the belt.
And as far as tuning in goes, I can guaran-damn-tee that I won't be dropping $40 to see a 20-minute clusterfuck main event. I'm barely watching Raw as it is and every time I do it seems to be, well, like last night's show. A few bright spots here and there but overall pretty weak and a lot of stuff seems lost at sea. I had a bit of hope around the time of the draft and tuned in more than I was, but they lost me again.
That was one of the worst Raws in a long time.
Raw this week showed everything that is wrong with the WWE. It had some good spots but a whole lot of stupid KNEE moments.
Jerichos speech to start the show was one of the better moments. He came out and did not rant or rave. He explained what he did to HBKs wife and kept it simple. No run ins helped this segment. Not sure what the payoff will be. Shawn does have a legit thing going on with his eye if you watch the interviews. If Shawn was to really hang up the boots I would expect that to be at a wrestlemania and not a blow off match at Unforgiven. Unless he considers that Ric Flairs homage.
I wish Vince would go ahead and retire the world tag titles since it is obvious that he does not care about them. Having the tag champs once again Job to Cena so he can remain looking like superman was stupid and useless. Hell let the Suicide Blondes go down there and take the titles. Least it might make the tag titles mean something.
JBL is the dominate heel on Raw and should be continued to be booked as such. He plays the school yard bully to a tee. That is why people hate him so much. Not to mention when he is on his A game he is their best promo guy in a heel fashion.
For people that lost their titles at the PPV Mickie and Kofi did way to much smiling last night. Where the hell is the desire or intensity. They should go back and look at old promos by Ric Flair,Terry Funk or even Dusty Rhodes. You dont lose your titles and be all yippie skippy. You want to kick ass. The writers are lost on that fact.
Santino and Beth with the titles is way better. They both carry them well. Some say Santino is nothing but comedy. Fine that is his gimmick and it works for him.
Well Punk got the feel good win at the PPV and back to jobbing the next night. Least it was the main event. Turn him heel and let him cut promos that suit him better.
Concept for the next world title match at the next PPV is KNEE KNEE KNEE!
RAW is weak and it shows every week now. Thats my cup of O. Later
BTW check out Cham-Pains new Public Adress on youtube its pretty damm good and alot of indy workers can appreciate it.
