Mike Awesome Commits Suicide?

Tha O Show has learned that ECW legend Mike Awesome has passed away. Sadly, the string of wrestling heroes that have left us too soon only continues to get longer.

The story of this death, however, has taken a very eerie spin. According to various reports Tha O Show has obtained, the late wrestler apparently hanged himself in his Tampa, Florida home this past Saturday night.

Born Michael Alfonso, Awesome had just turned 42.

Best known for his time in the original ECW (and worst known for his 'I love fat chicks' 70's guy gimmick in WCW), Mike Awesome quite often lived up to his name.

At 2005's One Night Stand pay-per-view, his match with Masato Tanaka arguably stole the show as it featured O's-a-plenty. His very presence, in addition to his exceptional performance at the PPV, was a welcome surprise as there were still rumours of bad blood existing between Awesome and ECW after his departure from the company five years prior.

Awesome, of course, also made appearances on WWE TV during the Invasion angle of 2001. He announced his retirement from wrestling shortly after his One Night Stand match.

The report of Awesome's death on WWE.com is quite vague. The nature of his death, however, is sure to make quite a story thoughout the world of professional wrestling for weeks to come.

I met Mike Awesome on several occassions - in ECW and WCW.

I conducted an interview with him shortly after he signed his big deal with WCW and many within ECW were hot at him.

We definately had a heated discussion ... about his inability to protect guys ... his broken promises to ECW and threats of taking the ECW title to Nitro.

I always appreciated his matches on a fan's level. Speaking as someone who understands what it takes to put a match together, he scared the shit out of me because he always appeared to have little concern for his opponent.

When this news hit us today, I was beyond shocked. News that this may indeed have been a suicide has left me beyond stunned.

It's fucking tragic. I hate to use that kind of language speaking of a mans passing, but I just don't know how else to say it. If it was suicide, I hope we get answers. When I read that earlier today, I re-read to make sure I wasn't misreading it. Hoping it said Mike Awesome signs deal or something, but after it sank in, I just stared at the screen for while. Remembering him for that match at the Original ONS, and even as the Fat Chick Thrilla and That 70's guy, no matter how much he suffered from bad booking at WCW he was a good performer and had some memorable matches. I also remember him winning the WWF's Hardcore title at the beginning of the invasion. I think he was the first guy to win Gold in the E. Tragic.

I just went to wikipedia and even though they aren't 100% right all the time, they have him listed as passed as well.

These idiots made a death pool and were arguing about how obvious it was that Awesome was gonna die.

It looks this way, but I pray that 07 doesnt become another year for monumental passings in the world of wrestling. I agree with all who say it, this sucks.
