Prairie Wrestling - This Saturday!

It is very rare these days to find an Independent promotion that continues to draw successfully over many years, as well as produce quality matches that follow story lines, and are built upon months of proper planning and booking.

I have recently had the privilege of becoming part of the regular roster for one such promotion based out of Alberta, called the Prairie Wrestling Alliance. PWA not only continues to draw large audiences of both loyal, and new fans, but with the recent addition of Lance Storm as the booker, the promotion guarantees matches that make psychological sense, build upon prior shows, and showcase both veteran and new talent by bringing them to a higher level.

Kurt Sorochan, co-owner/promoter was asked what sets PWA apart from other promotions. As a business, “PWA has a unique identity that our fans relate to in great and growing number. While entertaining the fans is the number one goal, the company is run as a business always continuing to grow its fan base. Traditionally wrestling promotions are created by active wrestlers who tend to build the promotion around them, while the owners of PWA build the promotion around the roster. PWA is a family, with everyone putting the company first and not themselves as individuals.”

PWA also very much caters to their very loyal fanbase. “Our locker room is very diverse and talented, and their job is to not just entertain you, but to make you care about them and the product.” expresses Sorochan. “PWA talent strives to put the “professional” in professional wrestling. Many people don’t know what to expect from an independent wrestling show, and are pleasantly surprised by the level of entertainment they receive for their money. Others, who have pre-conceived ideas what a show will be like are usually surprised by how good the product actually is. I GUARANTEE you will be entertained and will be hooked on the product after just one show!”

On June 19th, 2010, in Calgary, Alberta, at the Acadia Recreation Complex, PWA will be hosting their 8th annual “Night of Champions;” a wrestling gala which not only features the stars of the regular roster, but brings in former WWE, TNA and ECW Superstars to augment the talent, and give the audience something memorably different.

This year’s main event is a perfect example of the above-mentioned statement. Fans, and wrestlers alike will be treated to a great match, featuring local rising talent, and Storm Wrestling Academy graduate, “T-bone” Jack Sloan (real name Tom Hann),taking on current PWA Heavyweight Champion, and last week's guest on Tha O Show, former WWE and TNA Superstar Booker T.

“I would have to say I’m intrigued with this main event” says Sorochan. “ In all fairness to T-bone, he didn’t know he would be facing Booker T for the title he subsequently lost to the former 5 Time World Champion in April. This time he’s prepared and has nothing to lose, everything to gain and this is when he is most dangerous! On the other hand, he’s facing a man in Booker T who has been at the top of the wrestling world and can still show why he is a champion.”

There was a rationale behind bringing in Booker T. “He was chosen because he’s the current PWA Heavyweight Champion and an absolute professional to work with” explains Sorochan. “Not only does he lend credibility to the PWA Title but is committed to giving back to the independents where he got his start. His experience and willingness to offer advice to all our talent is a no brainer.”

This match is a huge opportunity for Sloan to prove himself as top talent within PWA. His character has grown over the years, and he has developed himself into one of the company's top heels. He has recently added to his credibility by winning matches against veterans such as former TNA superstar Johnny Devine, and Apocalypse.

"These days I've turned T-Bone down a more sick and demented road, the crowds I fight in front of don't know what to expect from me"expresses Sloan. “Though it is a character I've adapted to since moving here, make no mistake that the aggression, and lack of remorse for my opponents that I bring to the ring is very real. It's all real me, just with the volume turned up on Max!”

This match is also a chance for “T-bone” to redeem himself from his last encounter with Booker T on April 10, where he suffered a loss, making Booker T. the new PWA Heavyweight Champion.

“Though I feel I'm proving myself to the veterans around Western Canada, Booker T is a different story. He is my most experienced, successful, and toughest opponent to date. We have fought once, where I feel I walked into it a little too cocky and comfortable in my reign as PWA Heavyweight Champ, which resulted in Booker handing my ass to me and taking MY Championship. I won't make that mistake again! I now know that he hasn't missed a beat, and is everything he claims to be and more!”

Another stand-out match features Lance Storm, making a one-time wrestling return, by teaming up with veteran WWE/WCW/ECW/TNA talent Jerry Lynn against former PWA Tag Team Champions Danny Myers and one of Storm's former students, Mattias Wild, collectively knows as “Super Wild.”

Over the past few months, Storm has been appearing as the special guest referee in a number of matches featuring “Super Wild,” taking on the current PWA Tag Champs “The Nightmares.” This long-standing program came to a head when continuous, unsportsmanlike attempts by “Super Wild,” forced Storm to interfere with some biased, and slightly physical officiating. This, in turn, made Super Wild retaliate by attacking Storm with a chair, thus leading to this tag match on Night of Champions.

Rather than bringing in names, for the sake of bringing in names, the veteran superstars will add to already established story lines. In one of his more recent blogs on www.stormwrestling.com, Storm explains that “PWA gets Jerry Lynn coming in and being involved in a bit of a heated angle, rather than just a cold match. They also got a Lance Storm guest ref spot that popped the house a little bit, as well as a full Lance Storm comeback from an angle on their show. I've always thought bringing a guy in for one shot never really accomplished all that much.”

There is never any build or angle to it, because they are just in for the one shot, which leaves the match a little less interesting.” explains Storm. “You also run into the problem that very few name guys will put over local talent so you end up jobbing out your regular roster to outsiders in cold matches.”

With this build up, fans are sure to get a solid, intense match out of these very talented wrestlers.

If the matches alone weren't enough to attract people to this event, another important annual component that occurs at Night of Champions is the induction of PWA veterans/contributors into the PWA Hall of Fame. Last year, I attended to witness Johnny Devine's induction. This year, PWA will be inducting Phoenix Taylor, Chris Steele, and the Hart Family.

“Taylor was trained within the PWA system and is the only man to hold all 4 PWA titles” explains Sorochan.

Chris Steele is another veteran to be inducted this year. “Steele was trained in the famous “Hart Dungeon” and has been with the PWA since day one. Steele is a natural locker room leader who garners tremendous respect as a person and for his ability in the ring.”

And last, but certainly not least, the legendary Hart Family. According to Sorochan: “PWA wouldn’t have been created without the inspiration and ground-breaking work of the Harts. Most of the roster over the years were trained in the “Hart Dungeon” or trained by its graduates. Members of the Harts have been endorsing PWA to continue the tradition of professional wrestling in Alberta which is a huge honor. It’s only fitting that PWA show reciprocate the respect and honor them by inducting them into the Hall Of Fame and what better place than Calgary to do that!”

I can hardly wait to be a part of this incredible event, so what are you waiting for? Order your tickets right now, and bare witness to this incredible night of solid professional wrestling! Tickets are going fast, so order yours now!

I would give Johnny Devine a handjob just to feel closer to Danyah. I am pretty sure Devine would murder my black ass, but It would be worth it.
