Deeply Discussing Dexter

I would like to formally request the show be referred to as "Doxtor" because it DEFINITELY deserves those "O"s. I'm still speechless after last night's finale. It's not what "Dexter" does, it's how "Dexter" does it that makes this show the best show ever aired. The last 10 minutes of season 4 of "Dexter" were legit the most intense and most emotionally invested 10 minutes I've spent in front of a TV screen.

Kudos to every writer and producer involved with the show because the way the season built up and broke back down was amazing. It was a seamless transition from watching the first few kills of "The Trinity Killer" to Dexter's fascination with Trinity to Dexter's vehement need to dispose of Arthur Mitchell.

When the FBI came in to Miami Metro to take over the Trinity case and started taking pictures down and boxing files I got a feeling of "This is it, it's finally over. Arthur is done and all is well."

That feeling was reinforced after Dexter strapped up Arthur in the bomb shelter, hammered that creepy son of a bitch and dumped him in the ocean. Then Dexter starts talking about the moon and Rita and his light side and I'm thinking, "Cool. Seems like he's found the perfect balance as a family man."

He gets home and I think to myself that something crazy has to happen before he hops on a plane to meet Rita like Quinn breaks into his house like Doakes did or Jonah is sitting in Dex's apartment pissed because he knows Dex knows something about his dad.

Then Dexter gets a voicemail from Rita and calls her back and her phone rings in the kitchen. Strange. At this point I'm thinking "Slut! She's in the bedroom banging Elliot." Until Harrison starts crying.

When I heard Harrison cry my heart started pounding through my chest and when Dexter busted into the bathroom and saw his son sitting in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor; for the first time in my life --ten to God-- my jaw dropped. I think I was legit in a state of shock.

This show actually had me so emotionally invested I felt like this was my house, this was my wife and this was my son. And even though Rita annoyed the shit out of me this entire season there was still a strong connection to her and I was definitely sad to see her go like that. Absolutely phenomenal ending to a phenomenal season. Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way because I have a son about Harrison's age, but that scene is gonna stay with me for a long long time.

I actually had to rewatch the episode this morning because I shoot forgot almost everything else that happened in the episode. Though other than the Trinity storyline, not much happened. Deb knows that Dex's mom banged her dad and Dex's brother tried to kill her, which opens up a lot of doors for future seasons.

The other thing that is left wide open for next season is the fact that Trinity deviated from his cycle. There was no little boy before Rita and Rita fit the profile of a jumper, not a bathtub victim. If this doesn't arouse suspicions with the FBI, it definitely will with Quinn. Speaking of Quinn, I'd like to see him get a nice Doakes send-off.

So O-sters, that's it for this season, I can't believe I have to wait 9 months to see another episode of "Dexter". I started watching the series this summer so this is my first time having to wait until a new season starts. Hit up the comment section with your thoughts, predictions or anything else "Dexter" related you need off your chest and I'll be back next fall talking a Rita-less Season 5.

Victor,

I love "Dexter" and I love your articles about the show.

BUT...Trinity didn't quite deviate from the cycle at all. You got a hint when Batista, Masuka and crew found the decomposed 10 year old on the grounds of the new housing project shortly before Dexter's discovery of Rita's body.

I too, have been calling for Rita's death - jokingly - all season. The bitch was annoying, but sexy. And Dexter had finally grown some human emotion to connect with through her. She have been a hindrance to his Dark Passenger, but a necessary foil to the character of Dexter.

DAMN! I'm actually saddened she's dead. Arthur, you motherfucker!

Can't IMAGINE what they got planned for season 5!

I dunno Dan, Masuka said that body was badly decomposed which leads me to believe that it may have been the 10 year old from the Miami cycle that started the season. They didn't mention a missing boy since Scott Smith so I just assumed that was the old one. I'm not entirely sure, but if I had to guess I'd say he was from the last cycle. Not to mention Rita fits the jumper profile, not the bathtub victim. Bathtub victims are younger girls, jumpers are mothers of 2.

I know it's probably not anything to split hairs over really cuz regardless that scene was still powerful and works better with Dexter's similar past. All I'm saying is don't be surprised if we find out that something smells funny about that particular murder.

And yeah, Rita was annoying but her death still hit home and really tugged the heartstrings. Not to mention seeing that made me want Dex to pull Arthur's pieces back up and smash that summabitch again.

It was a revenge killing and I think homicide will see it that way... but not against Dexter. Arthur was in homicide, Arthur broke into Debra's flat. Whether deliberate or a case of mistaken identity I think they'll put it down to revenge against Debra.

Amazing finale. Dex returning home, the voicemail, the ringtone, the blood, all an increasing sense of dread.

I'm wondering if this means we will get dueling ghosts in Dexter's head next season. imagine Harry playing the devil, with Rita as the angel on his other shoulder. Could prove interesting.

Upon rewatching the episode, there's a final evil ass moment with Trinty where Dexter has him on the table and Dex tells him "I have a family" and Trinty just gives this evil bastard smirk, it was priceless. I'm wondering if they're gonna mention Dex and Trinty had a face to face in the middle of the homicide unit? Great episode, it's gonna be a long nine month wait for season five.

Victor,

The 10 year old boy is always BEFORE the trinity killings not after so you would think that the kid they found in the ground at the build was actually the kid who was killed at the start of his cycle in Miami this time before Lundy even showed up. If you wanna think about it really he started a new cycle kidnapping the Scott kid so Rita's death would fit in with the cycle being a bathtub victim in the series of four even if she didn't fit the profile she would have fit in the cycle of the four killings and Dexter stopped Arthur before he could finish the other two if he was even ever planning on it.

It will definitely be interesting to see where they go with the series next season will Dexter be a father of 3 now or will Astor and Cody go with the grandparents and leave Dexter only with Harrison? What will Deb have to say knowing about Dexter and Bryans past and how the latter turned out even if she doesn't know about Dexter? How will the Dark Passenger fit into the new season if Dexter is left all alone to raise a family of three or even of one? Season 4 was amazing over all and I just hope they didn't blow there load early and have some more awesomeness left for next season and beyond.

Victor,

good points, agreed.

A great end to a great season regardless of how sad the outcome.

Julie Benz is beautiful, she'll be missed from the show.

"Dexter" is up for three Golden Globes including Best Series and a nod to Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow for lead and supporting actors respectively.

Here's hoping they go 3 for 3.

Josh, I never said anything about a boy ending a cycle. I was just saying I thought the buried kid was from Trinity's first cycle in Miami that started the season. And perhaps Scott Smith started the Rita cycle, but I just assumed that he would have to actually kill the kid to move on to the next victim. Either way, Episode 1 of next season will help clear it up and should be hype.

Dan, I couldn't agree more, Julie Benz IS beautiful and Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow would be absolutely robbed if they didn't win awards.
