How important is the wardrobe of a wrestler? It doesn’t seem like a big thing but it really is. Check out the picture and wrestler I chose as an example. CM Punk.
I remember seeing pictures of him in magazines years ago and he was this straight edge (meaning no fun) guy with bleached blonde hair and baggy shorts with a few random tattoos. Now look at him. He looks like an actual wrestler.
Most times when people make fun of indy wrestlers they talk about their clothes. And honestly, a lot of the guys do look like guys that were just sitting in the crowd. Maybe they wear baggy clothes because they’re fat. But your clothes should match your style and attitude. How would Dean Malenko have looked wearing jeans and a tank top? Silly. Sometimes a wrestler just changing their tights will make a huge difference. The Miz recently started wearing trunks and it makes him look serious about what he’s doing.
Matt Hardy is another example of how changing your look can help greatly. For years him and his brother wore those big I believe Kikwear pants. Every time I saw Matt after The Hardy Boys split I would just think of the tag team. I kept saying that Matt needed a change. A haircut or something. When he showed up in different attire I was glad. Hell, Undertaker has changed his looks so many times he ran out of ideas and looks kinda how he did 15 years ago.
As a fan I always take wrestlers more seriously when they look the part. MVP, even though many made fun of his look when he showed up, has an outfit that suits his characters. Kurt Angle and Jack Swagger have outfits that fit what they used to do. Samoan wrestlers that wrestle barefoot give the idea that they are wild and have yet to adapt to wearing boots in the ring. Cryme Tyme dress their part but I can't take them seriously. Timberland boots do not a champion make. Chris Jericho changed his look to basic wrestling trunk, and even though it took a while to get used to, it now looks fine on him.
This goes for the ladies as well. Don’t think I forgot about them. The best example of a female that looks like she’s a wrestler is Beth Phoenix. Unlike most of the other WWE Divas she looks like she is ready to get into a ring, not the dance floor at a club. Mickie James, Michelle McCool, Layla, and Jillian Hall look more like women you would check out on the street than wrestlers. You can still show some skin for the pervs and look like a wrestler, ladies. If Mickie James put some tights on I’m sure no man alive would be mad.
Basically, I want my wrestlers to look like wrestlers. Not fans. Take off that shirt and work out. Get rid of those shorts and invest in some trunks. Get boots that match your clothes. Does this bother anyone else as much as it bothers me?

I'm STRONGLY agree that much of a wrestler's persona is conveyed through their attire, and street clothes just don't cut it. I do love seeing variety, as well. While Kane may have originally looked more like a villain for Godzilla to fight than a wrestler, he had a sense of mystique and ferocity to him that has been COMPLETELY undone as of late. So while I LOVE seeing the right outfit on a wrestler, I think it's great when they think outside the box and take a chance on something a little less conventional.
Looking the part is important to Ted Jr http://blog.pennlive.com/go/2009/11/skin_care_important_to_wwe_wre.html
Sometimes just wearing trunks and boots isnt always good. Aside from stone cold blacks trunks and boots usually don't do anything for them. Dean malenko, Shinjiro ohtani and others wore only black trunks and to me, while good wrestlers just looked boring and it took them showing their work to really sell you. Still i think you have to go the extra mile in terms of wardrobe nowadays, i mean how many indy wrestlers come out with robes nowaday?????
No one is saying to come out in the plainest trunks on Earth. It worked for Goldberg and Stone Cold, but many others would not be able to pull it off.
The robe thing is being overused. That should be used for wrestlers who have something to reveal in terms of physique or guys whose character it matches (Greg Valentine & Flair). I got tired of the hooded shirt long before Christian started rocking it. Thanks for the comment, guys.
i think someone should put a bug in Shows ear that his shorts are a tad short
