Bye-Bye Vince Russo

Be prepared for sweeping changes when Hulk Hogan takes over TNA following his tour of Australia.

Earlier today, LordsofPain.net posted an interview with Hulk Hogan covering a number of topics, including his relationship with Vince McMahon, a potential Austin-Hogan match (it’ll never happen, by the way), and his role in TNA.

By the sound of things, Hogan will have 100% control over the direction of the company.

To me, here’s the most interesting quote from the interview:

"Well, the one thing I would change and I'm going to change is ... I hate the writers. I cannot stand that they have a writing team sitting in the back telling the wrestlers what to say and telling the wrestlers what to do in the ring. That's one of the reasons why I went to TNA because the other promotion that's what they're all about - scripting the verbiage and scripting the matches and telling the wrestlers what to do."

It might not be a direct shot at Vince Russo, but it might as well be.

I like the sound of this. I really hope the onus is placed back on the workers to cut the promos that will create interest in their respective programs. TNA has the talent to do it – Kurt Angle, Mick Foley, Kevin Nash, Team 3D, Robert Roode, James Storm, and Eric Young (just to name some) don’t need writers telling them exactly what to say. Give them the bullet points, and let them use their own creativity to sell PPVs.

Sure, guys like A.J. Styles and Matt Morgan need some coaching – but they’re not going to improve when they’re told every word to say. Hopefully, Hogan is willing to coach these guys, because Hogan can sure as fuck cut a promo. And hopefully, Hogan is in this for the betterment of the company, and not just himself.

TNA without Vince Russo is a better TNA.

But what will TNA be like with Hulk Hogan?

Dude, nothing will change. People thought things would improve with Cornette. If anything TNA will decline. Hogan will not shoot TNA to the moon by being backstage, in the ring, or just around. It sucks that Dixie Carter and some fans think he will have a positive impact.

I think there'll be plenty of change . . . but as you say, it may not be for the betterment of the company.

I've gone back and forth on this many times . . . will Hogan be good for TNA, will he be bad? Either way, decreasing the influence of the writers is a good start.

At the very least, as a wrestling fan, I'm looking forward to seeing how this will all go down. Very interested, in fact.

And to be fair to Cornette, he had nowhere near the amount of power in TNA that Hogan will have. To the best of my knowledge, Cornette was never the booker there -- he was an agent.

You really wanna shake shit up in TNA? Get managers for guys like AJ Styles and Matt Morgan, who aren't as strong on the stick. If TNA is going to start letting the talent freestyle, why not invest some money in guys who excel at cutting promos?

Good point - Jim Cornette should still be working with Morgan on TV.

Not sure about Styles, though. Not sure if a babyface can really get over with a mouthpiece; or at least, I don't think there's a fit with Styles.

Any suggestions?

A babyface can get over with a manager. See: Undertaker and Paul Bearer.

Russo as manager worked pretty well for Styles back in the day. Or how about BG James to keep with the Southern theme? I would actually think it wouldn't be that hard to find a good mouthpiece for Styles. Simply find someone who has that "pitchman" quality to him, and can cut promos about how Styles is the most entertaining and talented high-flying wrestler in wrestling today.

The reason wrestler promos started becoming heavily scripted, is because much more importance was placed on promos, and there was no faith in the worker to be able to conduct a solid one on their own.

All the more reason that managers should be more prevalant these days. If they don't trust workers to do the job, why have the workers do it at all?

Are you telling me that somebody is telling Steiner what to say word for word?
