Report: Evan Tanner Dead At 37

“I plan on going so deep into the desert, that any failure of my equipment, could cost me my life.” - from Evan Tanner's official MySpace page, August 18, 2008.

MMAMania.com is reporting that the Imperial County Sheriff’s Department discovered the dead body of a man in the Palo Verde, California mountain area earlier today. That man was later identified as former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner.

Tanner’s friends had been texting him without reply since Wednesday before they reported him missing on Friday. Yesterday, a campsite was discovered in the Clapp Springs area of the Palo Verde mountains.

Tanner’s motorcycle was found at the campsite. A body was found today when a sheriffs deputy was flying around the general location of the campsite. The Imperial County deputy coroner is being flown in to retrieve and identify body.

Tanner, often referred to as MMA's mystery man, recently returned to the UFC but said he was going to re-tool after losing his first two fights back. He had a career record of 34-8.

Unfortunately, Tanner's fighting days are over. Rest in peace Evan.

This was basically a suicide. The circumstances sound deeply like premeditation and depression. Tanner has made something of an effort to be odd, travelling the States by foot for over 2 years and fighting occasionally to make the money to continue his drifting backpacker ways.

The fact that he made mention to needing his supplies to be in perfect workin order, but then didn't have enough gas for his bike - makes me think Kingdom is right.
