Tuesday Night Turmoil: Mad Scramble

Yet another week goes by in the land of the A show. Where each of the other shows has a scramble match and it’s terrible ECW is the one show where that would work. I still don’t like it, but I wouldn’t mind seeing more guys get sniffs of the gold.

Five may be too many, and the extreme Elimination Chamber was absurd so I’d rather leave it at four, but you can’t always get what you want. It is obvious though what the fans want, and that is Matt Hardy.

I guarantee somebody takes issue with that comment but that’s fine, because reasonable statements have the staunchest opposition. Pay attention to the commercials for this week’s edition of ECW on SciFi. One featured Mark Henry as the ECW Champion with pictures of the other guys eligible for the scramble.

I counted five over all and the other four what were they? Matt Hardy. Last weeks ECW drew a 1.5 rating, the previous week had drawn a 1.2 and last weeks show was built around a one match main and Matt Hardy was in that match. Don’t tell me that is increased interest in Mark Henry or Tony Atlas. He wasn’t drawing those numbers with Tommy Dreamer folks.

WWE has realized like most reasonable people, all personal feelings aside, Matt Hardy is a guy you can build a show around. Maybe not the company, but a show nonetheless and while I can hear the comments again of “he sounds funny,” or “he looks funny,” and the obligatory “he can’t talk,” let me ask you this, why do people keep tuned in? More importantly why do you?

I didn’t really mean to turn this into a soap box session in support of Matt Hardy, but what I’ve said is the truth and there isn’t too much to argue. This weeks edition was geared towards loading up four opponents for Mark Henry in the ECW championship scramble, and while I don’t understand every selection I don’t mind them either.

First of course Matt Hardy went over to gain his place in the match as the first guy outside the champion, though apparently he won’t necessarily enter first or second. The only negative I found was that he went over on John Morrison. What? Huh? I guess John Morrison on ECW at least has “name recognition” and they figured what better way to ease Matt Hardy more over than do this.

Over the past few weeks Evan Bourne and Chavo Guerrero have been building towards a match. The perfect ending, or hell even continuation of their feud would be one of the two of them going over in an important match to advance to an ECW Championship match, but no instead of that they put the Miz over on Bourne. Morrison loses and Miz wins.

As much as I’m starting to accept and appreciate the contributions of Miz, I don’t think he’s quite ready to be in a multi-man match without his partner. I’m not shitting on Miz completely but his heel character will be far drowned out by Mark Henry’s and it’ll be lukewarm heel Miz and not as over as he’d like to be heel Chavo Guerrero. I don’t know if I’d have gone that way, but oh well.

I kind of blew the load on the next entrant in that last paragraph, but I didn’t make you read ahead too far. Chavo Guerrero went over on Tommy Dreamer. I really don’t get this move either. If they’re trying to make up to Chavo how terrible they’ve made him look lately it’s a little too late.

My complaints about Miz and Chavo’s heel characters not belonging in this match could have easily been rectified had the outcome of the final match been different. Mike Knox and Finlay have been building for a match for a while too, like Bourne and Chavo. Tonight though they decided to have this match and Finlay went over. Why?

The heel gimmick Mike Knox has been working lately would be the perfect one to put opposite Mark Henry in the Scramble, well maybe not the scramble but any other multi man match. Two heels like that in the same match with high stakes can garner some interest.

They’ve effectively turned the ECW scramble into Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy vs. mixed bag of a babyface and two heels. Nothing against Chavo, Miz and Finlay but they’d have been easily interchangeable, I don’t know I know I’m being picky, but wouldn’t it just have been more interesting the other way around?

Quick results…
*Matt Hardy def John Morrison
*The Miz def. Evan Bourne
*Chavo Guerrero def. Tommy Dreamer
*Finlay def. Mike Knox

It's nice to see ECW continue to catch its stride. For a long time it was considered the "Land Of The Lost" for workers. Once you get past that it will never be the ECW of old and accept it for what it is now we get a nice hour show. The newer championship belt gives its own identity now. Only a couple of the old ECW workers remain. Is that good or bad. Depends on point of view. I kinda wished they had not gone the scramble way with the ECW title but it was pretty much written in stone after the other two brands are doing it. On the plus side it will probably be the first scramble match up and people will like seeing it fresh. Frankly by the end of the night people might be tired of the clusterfuck that many see the scrambles being. ECW will come first and at the least they will get 20 on a PPV for their title for a change.
Miz and not Morrison. Whatever. Chavo is in after being chumped out for so long. WOW how does that happen? Finlay is in to be a power/brawler I suppose. Pretty amazing how over either Hardy can get on their shows. Matt should carry the title but not sure now is the time.
ECW continues to improve weekly. It is becoming the workers show. TNA has always said they want to beat ECW. I think ECW says "Bring It!"

Matt doesn't really have to have the title right now, but this feud with Henry will and should lead to him holding. Not only can he carry a title as I said he can carry a show.

You can smirk if you want but if you want to get a buy rate at Mania and a crowd going apeshit have both Hardy's on their respective shows main for that card.

The best finish to a wrestlemania would be Jeff and Matt Winning their respective Heavyweight titles ans Santino winning the remaining one.

Who do u guys think should win the Rumble in 09 i think it should be Jeff Hardy but they might just wait and use him on the MITB match because they couldnt last year.
