Mercury Released

Joey Mercury, real name Adam Birch, was released from his World Wrestling Entertainment contract earlier today.

Birch was an ECW original wrestling as Joey Matthews with his long time tag partner Christian York. He was originally the second choice to play the Mercury character on Nitro. John Lauranitis was hoping to have Matt Capotelli in that spot, but injuries prevented him from being promoted at that time.

Birch has never been a favorite of WWE bookers, and they had been looking to release him ever since he failed the Wellness Policy testing in May of 2006.

Many believe he was kept around simply because Jeff Hardy was hired and an MNM / Hardy feud would draw.

His termination was again delayed (according to sources within WWE) after he sustained the serious facial injuries at Armageddon.

We are still waiting on an official reason for the release, and have attempted to contact both the WWE and Birch.

Damn, he was pretty good worker too. He was just missing something, and it wasn't something he couldn't have either, creative again dropped the ball on this one. TNA will have him on TV in 90 days, or he'll be back in RoH.

Poor Nitro. He had his singles push halted so that he could reform MNM and feud with the Hardy Boyz. Now, that feud has fizzled, Mercury is gone, and Nitro's got no sort of push, no momentun, nothing. The glass ceiling, as if it weren't already low enough above him, just lowered a little more.

Lance Storm once said that he couldn't ever see Johnny Nitro as a big-time main eventer. Based on the way he's been treated this calendar year, I have to agree.
