The 'Undefeated Samoan Submission Machine' must now drop the first word from that impressive handle.
I suppose if his winning streak had to end, this was the way to do it: To a legitimate star in a real wrestling match. Not with some shock stick and outside interference.
Samoa Joe tapped out last night, like so many others have before him, to Kurt Angle's patented ankle lock.
The match capped off the Genesis pay-per-view and has become a late candidate for match of the year. Considering these two have never faced each other, they showed a tremendous amount of chemistry.
Somewhat lost in all this is the fact that we have a NEW NWA Heavyweight Champion!
At the first pay-per-view since winning the title, Sting was defeated by the monster, Abyss. The catch here, is that Sting wasn't actually beaten. He got himself disqualified. No, there was no special stipulation...TNA has always had the rule that a champion cannot save their title on a DQ. A DQ in any title match will result in a title change.
This rule hasn't been used in a long, long time...but clearly still exists.
In another show-stealing match, Christian outlasted A.J. Styles in a complete wrestling clinic. IT was an outstanding match that had everything. When A.J. tried to roll Cage up, he simply sat out and picked up the pinfall. I guess we can call him the "Mostly Undefeated Canadian Pinning Machine".
Other match results:
-The LAX retained their titles against AMW
-Lance Hoyt and Ron Killings inexplicably went over on Austin Starr and Alex Shelly
-Christopher Daniels retained his X-Division Title against Chris Sabin
-The Naturals defeated Sonjay Dutt and Jay Lethal
-Diet DX (I mean the VooDoo Kin Mafia) defeated The New Movement

Actually, the last time I think the "title(s) change hands on DQ" rule was used when Jerry Lynn and Amazing Red held the tag titles. Over three years, but yeah, I had totally forgotten about that.
I think the last half of the show was the best, except the AJ/Christian match...which I though was probably the best next to Angle/Joe.
They should spend more time educating the fans to this DQ rule so it's always in the back of their heads. Makes sense since the WWE spent years educating us to the opposite.
The burial of Joe begins
I doubt that this marks the burial of Samoa Joe in TNA. While guys like Monty Brown did get buried in similar fashion, Samoa Joe is far more over than any of the other guys, at least it seems that way. Plus, Joe lost his first match to a legit Hall of Famer; Brown lost his to Jarrett. As for the rest of the show, some quick thoughts
-I know that I'm in the minority here, but there's just something about Abyss that I don't care for. It has nothing to do with him being face or heel, there's just something about his character that makes him seem out of place in TNA. Mitchell doesn't cut very good promos(click...doomsday! wtf?), and he just doesn't seem to have as much charisma as a main eventer should. Would rather have seen the title on Cage instead.
-Speaking of which, excellent match by Cage and Styles tonight. But then again, both always put on good matches. I almost sense a heel turn for AJ though.
-LAX being stripped of the titles...I'm on the fence on that one. On one hand, LAX puts on great matches, but a vacant title might lead to something interesting with such a strong tag division.
-Is Nash a face or heel? He's supposed to be a heel, but he's putting the X Division over big time, which is a very face-like move.
-New Age Outlaws. I doubt the WWE still has the legal rights to that name. They ought to go back to that name if they really wanna piss off Vinnie Mac.
MITCHELL DOESN'T CUT GOOD PROMOS????
Wow!!!
And in other news....
Rey Mysterio is actually 7 Feet Tall,
Big Daddy Donnie is 4'11"
and John Cena can wrestle....
MITCHELL DOESN'T CUT GOOD PROMOS????
Hitman you're way off in this one
Mitchell cuts wicked promos... Abyss gaining the title is just as much a nod to mitchell as it is to abyss
Ya it's a big fix cuz Russo is secretly working for WWE and is trying to sabotage TNA so all these former employees can return later.
here's their defense... IT'S KURT FUCKIN ANGLE!!!
Ya! AND IT WORKED!!!! Russo's career is a bigger work than Montreal!
Like that one Big Daddy?
Like I said, I figured I was gonna be in the minority. In fact, it would seem that I am the only person here against him. Going back to the whole opinion from my first post that I presented to begin with-in a nutshell, because of the lousy creative angles Abyss has been given in the past, it's hard to believe that this is a legitimate push. Because of this, my problem with Mitchell's promos is this-yes, I understand that the guy's gimmick is that he's a seriously sick bastard, but he oversells it, and consequently, his promos come off as being over the top, so they're not as good as a gimmick like that would allow. During Abyss' pushes, it showed him multiple times having ricidulously overdone vignettes(like trying to drown Cage in his pool or having Sting hang upside down, pummeling him with his baseball bat). When you go too far, the end result comes off not being nearly as good as it should be(which is pretty much the M.O. in all of TNA anyways).
I know that Mitchell has the capacity to cut great promos. Right now, though, they're not nearly as good as they could be, which is what I meant by my comment.
Creative did sort of dig themselves into a hole. Essentially, Angle beat the NWA Champion AND one of the most over superstars in the company. Where does that allow him to go from here? My guess(okay, my hope actually) is that maybe they'll have Angle do some work in the X Division. After a few months in the X Division, Joe will blindside him, thus resparking the feud between the two. As much as I loved that match between the two, I want the next one to have some more buildup. Like, while Angle keeps himself busy in the X Division, I'd also love to see Joe now turn face and feud with Abyss, eventually winning the title.
Picture it-Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship(I would say in an ironman match, but at this point, I don't know if Angle could be able to do that). That's got classic written all over it.
I meant likewise, not like. The feud with my keyboard has begun. *hits spacebar with chair*
point well taken... Angle pushing the Xdivision would be more beneficial... the xdivision may have to make a temporary change in format, but i think i could let it slide... cause, well... it is KURT FUCKIN ANGLE
Kurt Angle made matches with Shane McMahon compelling.
Kurt Angle has been established as a top star in the game.
Put two and two together and you don't NEED to throw him in with two of the biggest stars in the company for clean wins in his first two matches.
There would likely be more steam behind him if he went through the whole company...
