From the time the fight started, GSP completely dominated, going after Hughes with vicious strikes. Hughes seemed to have no answer.
He may have also been dazed by a couple of inadvertant (?) nut kicks.
About a minute into the second round, GSP caught Hughes with a high kick to the head and quickly followed up with a ground and pound attack. Just like that, St. Pierre was named the new UFC Welterweight Champion.
GSP is the second Canadian to wear UFC Gold. Ironically, the other man to do it also held the Welterweight strap. That other man, is Toronto native Carlos Newton... a man no stranger to Matt Hughes. It was Hughes that ended Newton's run.
Congratulations to the Quebecor on a huge win last night.
Other UFC 65 news...
Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia defeated Jeff "Snowman" Monson by unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46, 49-46). Sylvia once again successfully retained his Heavyweight title. Just wait for Lesnar, Tim. He's coming.
A strange finish to the Alessio Sakara and Drew McFedries. Late in round one Sakara collpased following a punch that appeared to miss completely. In what some fans are calling a total fix, others are saying a quick McFedries uppercut was totally missed by the cameras. Umm.... yaaaa....
How many more chances is Frank Mir going to get? I can't remember the last time he looked decent. As far as I'm concerned Dana White should be telling him to send in his application for The Ultimate Fighter 5. He was stopped by Brandon Vera at 1:09 of the first last night after laying there like a fish taking shots to the head.
Joe "Daddy" Stevenson forced Dokonjonosuke Mishima to tap out to his guillotine at 2:07 of Round 1.
UFC 66 goes down on December 30th and will feature Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell and Tito Ortiz for the third time. Good luck Tito. You're gonna need it.

Hughes got bitched slapped... so much for Mr. Smug
I agree with Frank on Monson... Except for the fact that he's a 5'9" powerhouse... Vince doesn't like those guys. He could make it in TNA.
Monson is a joke. How he lasted past the first I have no idea. I think Tim went easy.
UFC is coming to Montreal, and I for one will be there to see GSP defend his heavyweight title in front of a home town crowd!
Bigdaddy, thankyou for covering this, i'm watching the PPV tonight so im afraid no recap from theLUKE.
However, here are my thoughts;
GSP is a demigod.
Drew McFedries got slightly lucky, but deservedly so
Worst match of year: tie: Sylvia/Arlovski 3, Sylvia/Monson.
Brandon Vera vs Sylvia.. now that i wanna see.
Tim went easy? If that isn't a bold-faced lie, then I don't know what is. Sylvia hasn't had a good fight since he beat Assuerio Silva. Unfortunately, there's not much in the UFC heavyweight division as far as fighters go. I don't want to see Arlovski fight Sylvia again. I'd say best thing to do is work out the deal with Pride that fell flat and bring in someone like Fedor Emelianenko, Ron Waterman, Josh Barnett.
As for what Frank said...the Miletich camp is looking pretty shoddy at the moment. If i'm not mistaken, the only champion in that group is Sean Sherk and that'll last until Josh Koscheck gets a shot at the welterweight strap.
