Holy shit! Did I just see that?! In an article that I expected to write with the WWE Draft as its focal point, it must begin with a big "What the fuck?!!!".In, perhaps, an attempt to poke fun at the lack luster series finale of "The Sopranos", "Raw" ended last night with Vince McMahon entering a limosine that then exploded!! Huge O to the directors and cameramen who, somehow, were able to flawlessly shoot the incident without a cut away or edit. It literally looked like Mr. McMahon was killed last night!!
I'm not sure how to detour into the actual event that was last night's "Raw" with an ending like that...but I'll try.
Wow! Needless to say, "Raw" provided wrestling fans with something pretty different last night. While previous broadcasts of all three brands never hinted as to how the draft this year would actually work, last night's event showcased an intriguing approach to switching around their superstars.
Having matches determine which brand would "win" a draft pick was an interesting idea. The problems with this concept, however, was the fact that SOME matches made obvious which brand would be winning a pick. See Umaga (representing "Raw") VS. Balls Mahoney (ECW) as an example.
In addition, the E dropped the ball on trying to convey that the draft choices were actually random. Now, as usual, we all know the entire event is a work, but was the weirdo computer guitar music and ridiculous rapid fire images of superstars a necessary frill? All this only to end with a graphic that displayed the picture and name of a superstar to be drafted. Seconds later, the superstar appears on the ramp. Yeah, really random. I would have much preferred the old ball in a drum gimmick.
"Raw" clearly needed three hours to convey its messages last night. One message was that Mr. McMahon has created quite a legacy for himself. Whether one loves or hates him (as Dusty Rhodes most eloquently put it), you gotta respect the man. The other message was that the face of WWE was about to drastically change.
The delivery of message one was set up pretty nicely as Vince himself - easily one of the best actors in WWE history - read, every so eerily, a statement off the top of the broadcast. Very interestingly, a host of Hall of Famers, WWE Legends and other celebrities joined the broadcast to, if nothing else, prove Vince's popularity prowess and connections. Jesse Ventura, Bobby Heenan, Mick Foley, Donald Trump, Steve-O and even Big Snoop Dogg (gotta love that dude!) shared their thoughts about Vinnie Mac.Easily the most impressive - and simultaneously anti-climatic - entry was from Bret "The Hitman" Hart. The same guy who swore off WWE television, so much so that he refused to be publicly acknowledged at the WrestleMania after he entered the Hall of Fame, was on "Raw" last night. Not a pay-per-view...a "Raw"!
Now granted, last night's "Raw" was a big event, but Bret's appearance needed more hype. Then again, after his pretty much expected anti-Vince rant with zero follow-up or reaction from the commentators, you had to think that perhaps all is still not well between Hart and McMahon. Either way, I still popped seeing Bret on a WWE show.
Some awards: The most articulate comments about Vince - Mick Foley. The most "worked shoot"-like promo - Jesse Ventura. The most realistic/honest - Dusty Rhodes. The most entertaining - Stone Cold Steve Austin (cuss words and all!).
But finally, on to the second message and point of the evening - what we all REALLY watched "Raw" for - the draft.
Who would have guessed a champion VS. champion contest in Edge/Cena would begin "Raw"? I actually liked this idea as it gave the entire broadcast that BIG feel. Too bad the finish to the match was a BIG disappointment. A countout?
1) It almost made me think that the whole referee-decides-the-finish-because-he-wasn't-aware-of-what-it-was scenario was in effect. And that would be weird considering that a definite outcome was necessary for the purpose of a specific brand getting a draft choice.2) It pissed me off because it reeked of the whole idea of not "weakening" John Cena. Apparently, Cena simply can't do the job. No clean pin. No DIRTY pin. A countout. That's the only way Cena can lose, I guess. Although The Great Khali crushed him on "Saturday Night's Main Event" a couple weeks ago.
Speaking of Khali (always fun to set up your own segueway), as a result of Edge's "win", he becomes the first guy to get drafted to "SmackDown!". And yes, we're all thinking the same thing. Khali must hold the record for jumping brands more times in the shortest span than any other superstar ever! He's been in the company, what...about a year? And has gone from SD! to ECW to "Raw" and now back to SD!. And for what?
Nest was Carlito VS. CM Punk. I enjoyed the fact that last night's "Raw" was pretty much a week off from major storyline telling. Viewing the potential chemistry between two opponents not used to competing with each other was certainly worth watching. And both Carlito and Punk are capable of putting on great matches...if given the platform to do so. At least Carlito didn't go for the bullshit finish of the previous match and decided a countout wouldn't represent the end to the match.
Of course, less because of his initiative and more because this is what he was supposed to do...he drags Punk back into the ring after some great offence only to succumb to the GTS. Punk wins...and The Boogeyman is drafted to ECW.At this point, I'm not sure how Boogey fits in the world of the "extreme" other than to say that his character will breathe new life into the entertainment factor of that show. That could either be a bad or good thing depending how you look at it. My jury is still out.
As mentioned earlier, Umaga took on Balls Mahoney. The finish was obvious. What REALLY mattered, however, was that, as a result, King Boooker has now re-joined "Raw". Although this was not confirmed until later in the show, this draft selection included Queen Sharmell. Forgetting previous draft "rules" (wouldn't Sharmell have to be drafted individually?), the E has decided to appropriately keep the royal couple together.
Two things. One, it was GREAT to see King Booker back on TV. But does this mean that he is over his injury? If not, why have him come out last night? Two, it was even GREATER to see the sex goddess that is Queen Sharmell. How could any straight man not love that woman's body? Baby's got hips for days...a true hourglass figure. Booker, you lucky dog! All hail the queen!
I would like to sub-title the next section of this article.
I HATE BOBBY LASHLEY
Reason A) (I've been using numbers to explain various points all article, I thought it was time to mix things up). Bobby Lashley is still unjustly used as an unstoppable hero. And it sucks. The charisma-less and mediocre wrestler that is Lashley wins cleanly over my favourite, Chris Benoit. You could even hear boos from the crowd when Lashley didn't tap to the Crippler Crossface. You've heard me say this before - Benoit must hold some sort of record for putting over the most competitors CLEANLY.What is it about Benoit that makes the E feel like it seems fit for him to lose matches cleanly so often? The guy is the TRUE wrestling God in the company. (Sorry JBL - if it's any consolation, I popped when you said "Snoop Dizzle" last night).
But then I think...wait...this could be cool! Benoit's loss actually results in him going to ECW! And the first thing he does is point to Lashley's belt and to the classic this-is-where-the-belt-goes waist gesture. Benoit, the next ECW Champion - I love it! Will Chris get his deserved revenge?
But oh no, folks. This is not to be. Because later in the show Lashley is drafted to "Raw". This brings me to...
Reason B) The all-time WORST reaction to bad news award goes to Lashley after being told that his switch to "Raw" will force him to relinquish the ECW Championship. Is it so impossible for this guy to actually come up with a facial expression?!?! God, he's hard to watch!
And I know what you're all thinking...Lashley's "switch" doesn't mean a damn thing considering that he appears and wrestles on "Raw" all the time! I honestly think he did so more than he did on ECW broadcasts. So all this draft decision did was strip Lashley of his title. In John Cena-like fashion, Lashley cannot be beaten cleanly - so says WWE creative. Screw you guys.
Now back to our regularly scheduled article...
The Fabulous Moolah/Mae Young skit needs not to be mentioned. So please disregard that last sentence.
Another champion VS. champion match occurs in the form of U.S. champ MVP against Intercontinental champ Santino Marella. A decent match with an MVP win says what I've been saying for weeks. The storyline with Marella as IC champ is destroying this historic belt. With the title around Marella's waist, the championship seems more and more of a...waste.
Speaking of which (another nice segue...yeah!), a waste of a draft pick is next as Torrie Wilson goes to "SmackDown!". And the world collectively says, "big deal". I wonder if JBL was ribbing the company by over-selling his excitement about Torrie joining the SD! roster. Sounded like it to me.
Snitsky VS. The Miz sounds like another squash right? Of course. But Snitsky's overzealousness causes the ref to reverse the original decision. The result, "SmackDown!" gets another pick: Chris Masters. Before we all say "big deal" again, let's remember that Masters has been buried on "Raw" and is one of the superstars most in need of a brand change.Perhaps this move will jumpstart the kid's career again. Uh...once again, I speak too soon.
"Here's an idea", says someone on the creative team (I'm paraphrasing), "let's put Masters into a match immediately to represent his new life on 'SmackDown!'".
"Sounds great, who's he going to go over on?", asks another member of the team.
"Oh no one. We'll just bury him in the battle royal later on in the night", the first guy responds.
"How does this help Chris Masters?", asks the other.
"Who?"
I was intrigued by the triple threat match starring Jeff Hardy, Elijah Burke and Batista. I can't remember these three guys ever working each other - certainly not in this type of match. But, as usual, I get intrigued too soon. Batista wins. Thanks guys.
Burke, the future star, is destroyed. Man, this guy better get his shine one day. In the meantime, Batista (who actually has one more facial expression than Bobby Lashley - a smile) allows for "SmackDown!" to draft Ric Flair. While Tim Haught's idea of The Four Horseman being reformed with Chris Benoit as a member doesn't seem likely at all, his idea of a future title run for Flair may not be that far off. A Flair/Edge feud sounds like fun to me.The only thing that ruined this revelation to me was JBL yelling, "hot diggity damn dog" in excitement.
The aforementioned battle royal featuring fifteen superstars (five from each of the three brands) is the last match of the night. At first it was strange to see members of The New Breed and The ECW Originals on the same "team" but the every man for himself concept was quickly showcased in this match. The commentators did a good job of admonishing competitors who fought dudes on their own brand as the winner would secure two draft picks for his show.
Matt Hardy - the main event STILL waiting to happen - looked like he may have been going over...especially with his Benoit to Big Show-like removal of Mark Henry from the ring. But alas, Randy Orton wins...and Snitsky and Mr. Kennedy move to "Raw".
So wait...no Kennedy/Edge feud for the World Heavyweight Championship? What the hell?
And is he back yet? Again, like in the case with King Booker, if he's back on TV, you're telling the audience he should be back in the ring. If not, then why is the guy in the building? And again...why draft this guy? His revenge angle with Edge would have been gold.
Speaking of gold (man, I'm a segueway freak!), John Cena's WWE Championship will be on the line at Vengeance against four other men: King Booker, Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley and check this out...Mick Foley!Do I think Cena will lose his title? No. Is this an intriguing concept? Yes. You know I'll be looking for O's. But none bigger, I'm guessing, than the O that ended last night's "Raw".
I had to rewind it several times just to make sure I was actually seeing what I was seeing. Is Vince McMahon (storyline-wise) DEAD?!?! Why would they push an angle as extreme as this? The WWE website is certainly trying to put it over. And what was with the lack of commentary for this segment?
Love it or hate it, last night's "Raw" was truly representative of Vince McMahon himself. You had to respect it. The E has certainly shaken things up.

20 comments: on "Tha Raw Report - Back Draft!!"
According to some online sources, the limo explosion was filmed the night before, so the E might not have bothered to do any voiceovers on it. Honestly, though, I think it worked better, since none of the commentators would have much of anything original to say. A moment this big warrants not hearing any corny catchphrases, even from the great JBL.
I mentioned this in Tim's article, but I wonder if this is a sign that Vince is getting ready to step down for good. With the rest of the company moving in a new direction, it might make sense to have the younger generation of McMahons holding the reigns.
Plus, it would make sense, since on "McMahon Appreciation Night", McMahon actually brought out past superstars to talk about him, as opposed to previous "appreciation nights", where Vince just stood in the ring and rambled on amid a chorus of boos. It's his last night, so let the guys who were good to him in the past give him dap one more time before he drops a huge (car) bomb on the whole wrestling world.
Dan, don't get too excited about Foley's presence; he is only there to be the guy that Cena goes over on. This match looks like shit, and they're probably going to add another main eventer to Raw this Wednesday and turn the match into a Six-Pack Challenge for the championship.
Raw actually did something shocking for once. I was honestly just expecting McMahon to quietly leave. The funny thing, though, is that as I was leaving a local pizza place, they had Raw on, and one of the guys there (who tapped out a while ago), said something to the effect of "Are they gonna blow up the limo or something?" Sure enough, not two seconds after he finished saying that, there was the boom. He couldn't believe that he had called that.
Plunkett,
so what bro? No one assumes that Foley is going over. The guy shows up once and awhile for one reason...to deliver O's.
In case you didn't know, I'm into that kinda shit!
There's no doubt that he's going to deliver O's, I just think it's bullshit that he's being brought back for one match just to put over John Cena. Foley or not, it's still a match with John Cena AND Bobby Lashley in it.
I think the fact that Cena keeps being fed top star after top star to bury is a bunch of bullshit, and especially after watching the Kamala DVD, I think bringing back a legend like Mick Foley solely to put over some talentless sack of shit like John Cena that doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the WWE Championship is a big load of grade A WWE creative horse shit!
Sorry, got a little worked up there with the Cena hate. You get my point though. The E is going to let this match be dominated by Lashley and Cena, because they're trying to shove them down our throats. The O's will more than likely be held to a minumum because those two clusterfucks are in the match. You most likely won't O for Foley in this match any more than you O'd for his spots at WrestleMania 2000.
It's about time they did an angel that effected everyone in the WWE. The 3-hour Raw re-boot should make for some intresting match-up down the road and the Vince is dead angel is gonna be gold. There's still a jobber draft to go too. I'm not sure if all these guys shifting around is going to be better or worst but, for the first time in a while I can't wait to see. What I hope to see is that all the brands stay separated for a while and only cross for a good story related reason. They also really need to get a GM over on ECW. Just for the simple purpose of having a character that represents authority. Putting a face to ECW (along with The Couch on Raw and Teddy Long on Smackdown!) will help each brand develop it's own identity instead of the clusterfuck booking we have been gettin' lately.(and even got use to)
the first time in like how many years they did something shocking that wasnt totally the most ridiculous storyline ever. the first time in a long ass time in like many years they did something to actually make you wanna watch next weeke. fuck john cena look what is gonna happend
If you don't like John Cena, don't watch RAW.
When Vince said tonight would be his defining moment I knew they were taking his character off, ,but I was assuming it'd be a retirement... then I saw the limo and I told everyone I was watching with... BOOM!
This had to be planned prior to the Sopranos finale though... arranging a stunt like that doesn't seem like a one day job...
Best Raw in a long-ass time
I was texting a chick I'm seeing back and forth during the show and called it as soon as he got into the Limo. She sent back I was full of it and she'd give me an extra long BJ if it happened. She now owes me a blow job. :)
As far as Mick Foley goes, I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the match to put over Lashley instead of Cena. Vince still has a boner for Booby and it would take the belt of Cena without making him look at the lights.
One thing that last night's draft spelled out in deeper ink...RAW is the A show. Kennedy, Booker, Cena, Lindsey, HHH, Michaels, Jeff Hardy, Umaga, Snitsky (ok, not an A lister, but he'll get a Main Event push).
Smackdown has...Edge and Matt Hardy...um...Chris Masters and Kahli...um...YEAH!!!!
ECW has potential great match in Punk vs. Benoit...however you have to feel for Benoit..he gets to be cleanly pinned by a whole new list of wrestlers. Why are they hating on him so? I have to say, he sold the surprise and the slight disgust of being moved to ECW very well...or was that a shoot look?
Apparently the limo explosion was taped on sunday night...
We had the same thought on the Cena v Edge match about the whole referee-decides-the-finish-because-he-wasn't-aware-of-what-it-was scenario was in effect... highly doubt it though... .but it had that feeling
I dug the mat wrestling between Lashley and Benoit... I think Lashley was waiting for Benoit too much... when he should've been "dominating"
Marella v MVP wasn't bad... At least we know Marella will have a new opponent soon... seeing Master's is finally gone... Master's to SD will be good for him
I was cheering on Miz last night... I can't help it... its a sickness to want to see him succeed... OOORAH! God, I hate myself... I wish Cena and Miz were a tag or in a stable (maybe add Ashley to form a reality show stable) together and dominated... if only to hear Tha O Show to shit on them
The triple-threat was dope... aside from Burke being all but dismissed from the match... Hardy looked amazing, proved in a few minutes he could still work great with big guys... and to work well with a dumbass like Batista that says alot
I think it was ap retty good RAW and I don't think many ppl thought that Vince's limo was going to blow up. I thought maybe Triple H or Austin was going to turn out to be the driver.
I think the draft was ok, though I think SD got dicked , they lost Benoit, Booker and Kennedy and what did they get in return ? Khali, Masters, Fliar and Torrie Wilson. I think Matt Hardy is the big winner on SD cause after Edge beats Batista at the ppv who else is there to feud with him besides Hardy ?
I think they are going to make Benoit ECW champ since they shipped him there, reminds me of when Angle went to ECW. The only other ppl I can see getting the title are Punk and RVD if he stays in the WWE.
I was thinking the same as signguy, SD got shafted.
The ending to RAW was dope, although, where does it lead to from here?
Did the ring announcer really have to keep spitting the "the next match is for the next pick" line all night long?
I loathe the fact that Cena and Lashley are gonna be made to look like supermen in a match filled with actual champs. Cena must have some really incriminating shit against the company man. Even Trips jobbed to him a few times.
I guess I'll end the rant with a familiar line, FUCK YOU CENA!
B4 we all believe you.
Onto RAW. Good show, there isn't much to be said that hasn't already been said except for, WHERE THE FUCK WAS MICHELLE MCCOOL?
Also, this may be our one opportunity to see Cena lose the gold. Look at it this way, Orton is in the match, he can concussify somebody and go over without beating Cena, therefore Cena doesn't lose clean, and for that matter Lashley don't either. Why do I think Orton goes over? Because we are about a month or two away from the return of HHH. HHH and Orton will feud upon the return of the game. So why not put the belt on Orton, who is about as hot as he's been right now, and have HHH come back and take it off him? That way AGAIN, Cena doesn't look bad. All this to set up for HHH vs. Cena at Mania 24 where Cena will regain or retain his WWE Championship yet again.
For those that doubted my Hardy claim, lets look at the list of possible guys on SmackDown now. The Great Khali, Chris Masters, Hornswaggle, Jamie Noble, and Daivari. With all those stellar choices to put Edge in a match with for the gold, I see the only truly logical choice as being Matt F'n Hardy.
As for the Kennedy and Edge unfinished business thing, unless Kennedy is taken back or Edge is brought over in the supplemental draft, it aint happening. Matt Hardy got the second biggest rub of the night. Orton is getting a mega push so he can job to H when H comes back, belt or no belt. Matt Hardy is on his way, there is no denying. Even if he doesn't change his pants or get a haircut.
wow vinces death is getting alot of media coverage
haha nice DJB But I still stand where i stand on the matt issue now even if he is made into a mainevneter against edge i think it would only be used as way to solidify edges standing as an ubber heel it will probaly lead up to some other face to come in steal all the thunder (none white) of the hardy fued
DJB-
Carolina now officially hates you. Hardy is the only truly logical choice? What about the man whose country you live in?
Time for the gold to come back to Flair Country. Reports backstage have indicated that they were toying with the idea of giving him another run; they even teased it on WWE.com following the draft.
Trust me, nothing would make me happier than to see Ric win a world title. But while it does make the testes tingle, you have to sort of pull against that notion at this point. It would be nothing more than a lateral movement.
While the prospect of Naitch getting another title run is possible, and could make sense it wouldn't further any other charactes for a while. So with the draft would it be logical to push the pushed one? WOOOOOO.
Ric will most likely form a 4-Horseman stable with his boy Batista, throw in a young guy and maybe even an MVP. Do you know what would make this new-gen Horseman a hard sell? The fact that 85% of smart marks would shit on a face horseman and even marks familliar with the horsemen would shit on a face stable. The horsemen in every sense of the word are heel. They are the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse for Christ's sake.
So having a dominant face faction is useless, unless they have an equally powerful heel stable, and unless Edge gets a green light on leading a heel stable this would be pointless.
Have Ric win the title then what? After the sentimental value wore off, he wouldn't have a strong character heelwise to put over. Chris Masters? The Great Shitty? Like I said, a smart choice, would be to get Hardy OVER, as a main eventer, maybe not even as world champ, but a guy who you see as main event status.
Give Ric a run, but make sure the younger talent is OVER FIRST. Ric was always so great at getting over other talent before himself, that's why he was a 16-19 time world champ, he let those beneath him(sometimes FAR FAR beneath) hold that title, even if for a few days, or hours. But they looked good and because of it were considered to be on that level, and would always have the recognition of CHAMPION.
By the way, next week on SmackDown check the signs, the last several events I've been to in the Cackalack have had This is Hardy Country signs.
Matt/Jeff aren't on that level, but they have the fans to help elevate them to it.
Not that anyone cares, but I got my winnings last night.
As far as Flair moving goes, I would not be the least bit surprised if they swerve Batista and have Flair join up with Edge and form a new stable (like him or not, Masters would be a top choice to be apart of it). It will NOT be the 4 Horsemen.
No one involved in the E cares to use that name. Flair and Anderson don't wont to soil it further and Vince has no interest in it. H was a Horsemen mark and that's why he created Evolution...but that's the point...he could have made it "the New Horsemen," but didn't.
While I somewhat see what you are saying, if the E didn't care about the name, why would they release the DVD and a 4horsemen tshirt if they didn't think it was important or would sell?
Hunter and Evolution wasnt a fourhorseman style gimmick. Past present and future, not 4 of the games top stars at the time. That is the 4H.
The DVD wasn't about caring about the Horsemen. It was about caring about the money a DVD will make. They made an AWA DVD, but that doesn't mean they are going to bring back the Team Challenge.
